A1 Plastics: New PET Recycling Plant in Cambodia

The Hong Kong–registered company A1 Plastics Resources Ltd. is building a new PET recycling plant in Cambodia.

According to reports from Cambodian state media, the groundbreaking ceremony for the complex took place in January at the Krakor site in the Pursat Special Economic Zone (SEZ), northwest of the capital Phnom Penh. Among the guests at the ceremony were Cambodia’s Minister of Energy, Keo Rottanak, and A1 Plastics CEO Deborah Lee.

The reports state that the facility will cover an area of approximately 12,000 square meters and will have the capacity to recycle up to 44,000 tonnes of PET waste per year. The complex will include a line for AI-based sorting and cleaning of PET waste, as well as a line for further processing into food-grade rPET pellets compliant with EFSA and FDA standards. The LSP (Liquid State Polycondensation) technology developed by the Austrian company NGR will be used.

The plant’s energy supply will be sourced entirely from renewable energy. In addition, modern filtration systems are intended to prevent the release of microplastics into the environment. Certification of the entire complex according to the LEED Gold standard is being targeted.

Media reports estimate the investment in the construction of the new recycling complex in Krakor at around USD 29 million. Completion of the facility is planned by the end of this year. Approximately 150 permanent jobs are expected to be created at the complex. The 4.5-hectare site in the Pursat SEZ also already provides the conditions for future expansion.
