Sabic: New PPS Compounds for High-Voltage Power Modules

Sabic has introduced the new LNP Thermocomp OFM76XXP and OFM76EXP compounds, a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS)-based material family designed for high-performance and high-voltage applications. The materials are intended for power modules such as insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches and target applications in electric drivetrains, fast-charging systems, renewable energy, and industrial automation.

According to Sabic, the new compounds meet the increasing demands of modern high-voltage systems operating at 800 volts and above. Key properties include high impact strength, dimensional stability, a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) rated at the highest PLC 0 classification, high dielectric strength for electrical insulation, and a UL94 V0 flammability rating. In addition, the materials withstand thermal shock and retain approximately 90% of their mechanical strength and insulation performance after 1,000 hours of heat aging at 200°C.

Compared with polybutylene terephthalate (PBT)- and polyphthalamide (PPA)-based materials, the PPS compounds are said to provide greater dimensional stability and improved resistance to thermal stress. Their UL94 V0 rating at a wall thickness of just 0.4 mm makes them suitable for compact and lightweight assemblies. The materials are also available in white or light-colored grades, allowing printed QR codes on power semiconductors to remain more easily readable.

The LNP Thermocomp OFM76EXP grade additionally offers enhanced laser markability, particularly high impact strength, good adhesion to silicone-based sealants, and improved crack resistance.

Beyond insulation baseplates for IGBT power modules, the new compounds are also suitable for DC transmission systems, high-voltage inverters and circuit breakers, supports for integrated busbars, and components used in renewable energy infrastructure. The materials are available worldwide.
