Photo: Erbslöh Ethylene-copolymers from DuPont are intended for the modification of thermoplastics. For example, depending on the grade selected, Fusabond® coupling agents can be used as a highly-efficient additive for bonding fillers such as mineral-based, halogen-free flame retardants, or as high performance impact modifiers for nylon. Elvaloy® terpolymers are non-migrating, permanently-lasting plasticizers. Elvaloy® AC are highly thermally-stable ethylene-acrylates, which are used, for example, as the carrier material for masterbatch products due to their high filler dispersion and, thanks to their universal compatibility, are also suitable for use with engineering polymers such as polyesters and nylons. Renewably-sourced castor oil forms the basis for the multifunctional polyols from Vertellus. These included the Polycin® grades, which provide the producers of polyurethane systems with a multitude of possibilities to tailor specific properties such as chemical resistance or elongation to application-specific requirements of the processor. Paricin® polyol grades act as lubricants which quickly migrate to the surface of the material, thereby enhancing the assembly properties of EPDM elastomer components, whilst Flexricin®, which acts as a highly-efficient plasticizer, improves the elasticity of polyurethane and elastomer systems. Catafor® antistatic agents from Rhodia have been specially developed for use with polyurethanes. Normally, just 2% to 3% of the overall polymer weight is enough to reduce surface conductivity to values of under 107 to 1011 ohm/square. When dissolved in the polyol fraction, the additive delivers a permanent antistatic effect in polyurethane foams, micro-cellular and solid polyurethane elastomers. Depending on the grade, Catafor® antistatic agents are suitable for use at temperatures up to 350 °C as well as for rubber, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), EVA, polyester (PET), polyolefins, polystyrene, ABS, PVC, etc. The Vansil® and Vancote® Wollastonit grades from Vanderbilt are used to improve the mechanical properties of thermoplastics, especially polypropylene. The naturally-occurring calcium silicates form needle-shaped crystals which can be used at a length to diameter ratio of 1:5 as a filling agent and at values of 1:15 as a reinforcing agent. Depending on the intended application, grades are available untreated or treated for improved adhesion. A range of proprietary additives from C.H. Erbslöh also show great promise, including CHE®-WAX lubrication and processing aids as well as CHE®-CaMon processing and nucleating agents for PA and POM.
