Clariant: New plant for flame retardants opened in China

The Swiss speciality chemicals group Clariant has opened a new plant in China for the production of halogen-free flame retardants under the Exolit OP brand.

According to a press release, the ceremonial commissioning of the new production facility took place in mid-October at the Daya Bay site near Huizhou in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. Clariant began construction work at the end of 2021 and has since invested around CHF 60 million (EUR 62 million) in a first production line. A second production line costing a further CHF 40 million (EUR 41 million) is currently under construction and is scheduled to go into operation in the course of next year.

Clariant will manufacture its entire portfolio of organophosphorus flame retardants at the new plant, complementing the two existing Exolit plants at the Knapsack Chemical Park in Hürth near Cologne. In addition, the "One Clariant Campus" R&D centre in Shanghai, which will open in 2021, will support customers at the new plant in the development and practical testing of fire protection solutions. So far, 100 new jobs have been created at the Daya Bay site.

Clariant manager Angela Cackovich explained in the press release: "With this first-class new production facility, we are strengthening our leading position and our global expertise in innovative and sustainable fire protection solutions. We are close to customers in China and across the Asia-Pacific region who are driving technological development in areas such as e-mobility, infrastructure, 5G communications and energy supply with innovative components, devices and systems. Local production enables us to improve collaboration, design customised solutions and significantly shorten delivery times."

Clariant's Exolit OP brand flame retardants are based on aluminium diethyl phosphinate (DEPAL) and are used in the processing of polyamides, polyesters, thermosetting resins and elastomers into engineering plastics.

Clariant, based in Muttenz near Basel, generated EBITDA of CHF 501 million (EUR 518 million) from sales totalling CHF 3.315 billion (EUR 3.429 billion) in the first nine months of the 2023 financial year.
