Toppan: Japanese company builds barrier film plant in northern Bohemia

The Japanese Toppan Group is building new capacities for the production of barrier films in the north of the Czech Republic.

According to a press release, the Group subsidiary Toppan Packaging Czech laid the foundation stone for a new plant in Havraň near Most at the beginning of the month. The Czech site will produce barrier films under the Group brand "GL Barrier" in the future. Completion of the plant has been announced for the end of next year, but no details have yet been provided on the planned capacities. According to Czech media reports, Toppan is investing around EUR 100 million in the construction of the plant, which will initially create around 70 jobs in the first phase.

Toppan's GL Barrier brand barrier films are based on PET, polyethylene, polypropylene and polyamide carrier films and have organic and inorganic barrier coatings. With the construction of the plant in the Czech Republic, Toppan is responding to the high demand on the European markets. To date, the Group has produced GL Barrier brand films at its Japanese sites in Fukaya and Fukuoka and in Griffin in the US state of Georgia.

In September of this year, Toppan also strengthened its position with the acquisition of the British packaging manufacturer Skymark Packaging International. The company, based in Scunthorpe in north-east England, produces a wide range of flexible packaging materials based on polyethylene and polypropylene films. In future, Skymark will primarily expand and complement the product range of the Interflex Group, an industry company controlled by Toppan.

Toppan's other assets in the packaging sector include Toppan Speciality Films (formerly Max Speciality Films), one of the largest manufacturers of biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BoPP film) in India, and Majend Makcs in Thailand.

In addition to the packaging sector, the Toppan Group is primarily active in the printing industry as well as in the electronics and communications sectors. The total turnover of the Tokyo-based group totalled JPY 1,639 billion (EUR 10.3 billion) in the 2022/2023 financial year.
