Mexican petrochemicals group Alpek is discontinuing production at its PET plant in Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA.

The group announced this in a press release at the end of May. According to the release, the plant, which is operated by the group's subsidiary Alpek Polyester USA, will be shut down on 31 July this year. The site has a production capacity of 170,000 tonnes of PET and 35,000 tonnes of rPET flakes per year and employs around 180 people. Alpek acquired the plant from industry group DuPont in 2001.

According to the press release, the plant closure is part of Alpek's long-term strategy to optimise its global presence and reduce production costs. The group intends to focus on developing competitive and expandable sites. Alpek expects the closure of the Fayetteville site to result in annual savings of approximately USD 20 million.

Alpek is headquartered in San Pedro Garza García near Monterrey and has more than 30 production sites in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Oman, with a total of around 5,000 employees. The group is one of the world's largest producers of PTA, PET and polyester fibres and also produces polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (EPS) as well as basic chemicals and specialities.

For the 2024 financial year, the listed company Alpek reported adjusted EBITDA of MXN 11.728 billion (EUR 536 million) and a net loss of MXN 212 million (EUR 10 million) on sales of MXN 137.409 billion (EUR 6.283 billion).
