Covestro: Significant Increase in TDI Capacity at the Shanghai Site

Covestro has completed a debottlenecking project to expand TDI (toluene diisocyanate) production at its integrated production site in Shanghai, China. Annual capacity has been increased from 310,000 to 370,000 tonnes, representing a rise of around 20 percent. The aim of the measure is to ensure a more reliable supply to the Asia-Pacific markets in response to growing demand.

The capacity expansion was achieved by optimizing existing facilities and processes at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. Instead of constructing additional production lines, the company focused on making more efficient use of the existing infrastructure. The project was implemented on schedule.

TDI is a key raw material for the production of flexible polyurethane foams, which are used in furniture, mattresses, and automotive applications such as vehicle seating. The increased production output is expected to benefit customers in these application areas in China and across the wider Asia-Pacific region in particular.

With this expansion, Covestro is also strengthening its regional and global TDI production network. In addition to the Shanghai site, the company operates other large-scale plants in Dormagen, Germany, and Baytown, Texas, USA. The measure is part of a strategy to expand capacity in high-growth markets through targeted and efficient investments.
