Bewi: New EPS recycling plant opened in Norway

Bewi has commissioned a plant for recycling expanded polystyrene (EPS) at its insulation solutions site in Fredrikstad, Norway. According to the company, it is the first facility of its kind in Norway. The goal is to process collected EPS material directly on-site and use it in the production of new insulation materials.

The recycling plant is located on the grounds of the existing production facility. The recycled material is integrated into the ongoing manufacturing process without additional transport routes. According to Jens Christian Hernes, Managing Director of Bewi Insulation Norway, this is intended to help meet the growing demand for insulation products with recycled content, which is increasing due to both market requirements and regulatory mandates.

The plant is part of the company's Europe-wide collection and recycling activities. It features modern sorting and processing technology and achieves an annual recycling capacity of up to 3,500 tonnes of EPS. The material comes from regionally collected insulation and packaging waste. It is granulated or mechanically processed and subsequently used as a raw material for new insulation products such as GreenLine EPS and Terra XPS.

According to the company, the project was supported by the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund, Sintef Community, and local stakeholders, among others. In this context, Bewi highlights the importance of a functioning value chain, from collection and logistics to recycling and production.

In 2025, Bewi reported collecting more than 38,000 tonnes of EPS across Europe. In addition to the new site in Norway, the company operates recycling plants in Sweden, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and holds minority stakes in a plant in Poland.
