Scanfill: Introduction of Food-Grade Recycled PP Film with 30% PCR Content

Swedish plastics processor Scanfill has launched "Scanfoil rPP POP" (Prevented Ocean Plastic), a polypropylene film made from 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material that is approved for food contact. According to the company, it is among the first transparent recycled PP films available in large commercial volumes that comply with the requirements of the European Regulation on recycled plastics intended for food contact (EU) 2022/1616.

The film has been developed to support future requirements of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) regarding the use of recycled content in plastic packaging. It is available in various levels of transparency and is said to offer material properties comparable to those of virgin polypropylene.

The product is based on mechanically recycled post-consumer polypropylene. According to Scanfill, the recycling process used enables the production of larger volumes of food-grade recycled material from PP that has already been used by consumers. Before being processed into film, the material undergoes a qualified recycling process at the supplier's facility, which is a prerequisite for food-contact approval. After receipt of the material, Scanfill carries out additional quality and safety inspections.

The raw material consists of used plastic cups collected in coastal regions of Southeast Asia before they can enter rivers or the ocean. The company emphasizes that the film is fully recyclable and that the origin of the recycled material can be traced back to the respective collection region.

With the product launch, Scanfill is responding to the long-standing shortage of high-quality, food-grade recycled polypropylene. The availability of such materials is regarded as a key prerequisite for meeting increasing recycled-content requirements in the packaging sector.
