Morssinkhof Rymoplast: New PET Recycling Plant Opens in Belgium

With the official opening of "MoPET Belgium" in Neufchâteau, plastics recycler Morssinkhof Rymoplast is expanding its recycling capacity for PET packaging in Belgium. The new facility is designed to process up to 40,000 tonnes of PET annually (see also plasticker news of July 15, 2024).

The plant processes transparent and opaque PET bottles as well as PET trays. The packaging waste is converted into high-quality recycled material for the production of new food packaging. The facility is therefore able to handle different PET waste streams, expanding the company's activities beyond its previous primary focus on bottle-to-bottle recycling.

In addition to recycling PET bottles, the plant also includes tray-to-tray recycling. Used PET trays are processed into recycled material that can be used again to manufacture similar packaging. Furthermore, opaque PET bottles will be recycled into materials suitable for new food-contact applications.

According to the company, the facility builds on its existing expertise in closed-loop beverage bottle recycling. By processing additional packaging types, it aims to increase the proportion of PET materials that can be recycled back into food packaging after use.

The company emphasizes that establishing effective circular systems requires not only advanced recycling technology but also cooperation between manufacturers, waste management companies, sorting facilities, recyclers, and packaging converters. Adequate collection, sorting, and material quality are essential for enabling the use of recycled material in new packaging.

The new site will create around 90 jobs. At the same time, the facility is intended to serve as a foundation for the further development and industrial implementation of PET recycling technologies.
