TotalEnergies: Chemical recycling plant in Grandpuits fully acquired

TotalEnergies is acquiring the 35% stake previously held by Plastic Energy in the chemical recycling plant for plastic waste in Grandpuits, in the French department of Seine-et-Marne. The energy company, which previously held a 65% stake, will thus become the plant’s sole owner. The transaction is part of a reorganisation of Plastic Energy’s ownership structure. No financial details were disclosed.

The plant began operating in March 2026 and can process up to 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually. It primarily uses waste from French households that is difficult to recycle mechanically, including material from separate recycling collections. Until now, these waste streams have largely been landfilled or incinerated.

In Grandpuits, plastic waste is converted into a synthetic oil through pyrolysis at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This oil serves as a circular feedstock in petrochemical processes, partially replacing fossil-based raw materials. According to TotalEnergies, it can be used to produce recycled plastics with properties equivalent to virgin material, including for applications subject to stringent quality and regulatory requirements, such as food packaging and medical products.

The plant’s long-term supply of plastic waste is to be secured through agreements TotalEnergies signed with the French companies Citeo and Paprec in 2023.
