Hellweg Maschinenbau to Demonstrate Grinding of Challenging Plastics

Hellweg Maschinenbau will showcase two fully operational granulators at Fakuma 2026, demonstrating the size reduction of a wide range of plastic waste. Visitors will also have the opportunity to bring their own material samples for test grinding at the company’s booth. The machines on display will feature working widths of 230 mm and 600 mm.

The demonstrations will focus in particular on materials that pose greater challenges during size reduction, including films, high-performance polymers, technical fibers and soft thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). According to Hellweg, even soft TPE grades can be processed without the need for additional cooling of either the material or the granulator.

Shear Cutting for Consistent Regrind Quality
Hellweg’s granulators use a shear-cutting principle in which the feed material is cut between rotor and stator knives. The process is designed to produce homogeneous regrind with a low proportion of fines, a narrow particle-size distribution and a uniform, smooth-edged particle geometry. Depending on the machine configuration, particle sizes can range from 1 mm to 50 mm.

Regrind quality is an important factor in downstream recycling and processing operations, as particle size and geometry can affect conveying, dosing and further processing. The live trials at Fakuma, using materials supplied by customers, are intended to demonstrate the machines’ suitability for a broad range of plastics, including materials that are particularly difficult to grind.

Expanded Digital Process and Condition Monitoring
Hellweg will also highlight further developments to its modular “Smart Control” system. The system can monitor parameters such as power consumption, motor speed and bearing temperatures. Operating-hour counters help track the service life of knives, screens and V-belts, while the relationship between motor load and material throughput can also be monitored and used for process optimization.

At Fakuma 2026, the company will present additional process and condition monitoring functions. These include an online microwave-based flow measurement system, first introduced at K 2025, which enables throughput performance to be tracked over time.

A new feature at Fakuma 2026 is vibration measurement. The function is intended to provide additional information on machine condition and enhance the system’s condition-monitoring capabilities.
