As part of the new joint project "Saxy Plastics," the Leipzig start-up aevoloop, together with the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden (IPF), the University of Leipzig, and the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC), are jointly working on the development of fully circular plastics. The goal is to bring bio-based, recyclable, and biodegradable materials to industrial application and to scale up production capacities in Saxony. The project is supported by the European Union and the Free State of Saxony as part of the R&D joint project funding of the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) with a total of 6.4 million euros. The total volume amounts to around 8.4 million euros, of which almost five million euros are allocated to aevoloop as the lead partner. Research for a Closed Plastics Circular Economy The patented process developed by aevoloop is intended to enable plastics that are chemically recyclable, bio-based, and biodegradable without the material quality being lost during recycling. The consortium's goal is the further development of this technology up to industrial application. The University of Leipzig is researching enzymes that can break down the aevoloop polymers into their starting materials under mild conditions. The Center for the Transformation of Chemistry is working on transferring the results into large-scale processes. The Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden is developing application-specific compounds, for example for packaging and technical components. The consortium thus covers the entire value chain – from raw material production and product design to recycling. Contribution to the Sustainable Transformation of the Plastics Industry "Saxy Plastics" aims to demonstrate that novel, circular plastic systems can represent a sustainable alternative to conventional materials. The project combines scientific research, industrial development, and regional innovation promotion. The start-up aevoloop was founded by the chemist Dr. Manuel Häußler. His research forms the basis of the patented recycling process. In his estimation, the technology developed in Saxony "can change the plastics industry worldwide" and pave the way for a closed material cycle. |
