PET to PET: New record in bottle-to-bottle recycling - 33,675 tonnes of PET bottles recycled in 2025

PET to PET Recycling Österreich GmbH reached a new record high in the 2025 financial year, recycling 33,675 tonnes of PET material. This is equivalent to approximately 1.34 billion processed PET beverage bottles and represents an increase of around seven percent compared to the previous year (2024: 31,354 tonnes). This result also surpasses the company's previous record set in 2022.

The company identified the introduction of single-use deposit systems in several European countries—including Hungary, Slovakia, and, since the beginning of 2025, Austria—as a key driver for the increase in volume. Following a significant rise in processing volumes in the first half of the year, a slowdown was observed as the year progressed. This development is attributed, among other factors, to temporary consumer purchasing restraint following the introduction of the deposit system.

Despite the record result, PET to PET described the market environment for recycled PET in 2025 as challenging. Significantly increased price differences between primary and secondary raw materials reportedly led to a greater use of virgin material. Additionally, increasing imports of low-cost secondary raw materials from non-EU countries put pressure on the sales market. While the processing volume was increased, sales of recyclates remained about three percent below the previous year's level, leading to temporary inventory buildup.

At its Müllendorf site, PET to PET implemented several investment measures in 2025. These include the commissioning of additional metal separation systems to detect and remove can contaminants, as well as the construction of a new silo with a capacity of 140 cubic meters for additional storage. Furthermore, an existing storage area was roofed over to allow for a future expansion of the photovoltaic system.

For 2026, the company plans further automation steps, particularly in the washing plant and plant feeding systems. The goal is to improve work processes, increase efficiency, and secure long-term competitiveness.
