Covestro inaugurated a new production line for polyester resins at its Meppen site on November 3, 2026. The additional reactor line provides the plastics manufacturer with production capacity in the double-digit kiloton range. The investment project, implemented over several years, involved an expenditure of several million euros. According to the company, the expansion is intended to increase the supply of polyester resins to the European market for coatings, packaging and industrial applications. The new facility is integrated into the plant's GMP-compliant (Good Manufacturing Practice) production infrastructure. The associated requirements for manufacturing processes and documentation are designed to ensure consistent product quality and are particularly relevant for coating applications involving food contact. The reactor is designed to produce high-molecular-weight and standard polyester grades, as well as alkyd and acrylic resins. It can also manufacture intermediates for polyurethane dispersions. The resins produced at the site are marketed under the brand names "Uralac", "Uradil", "Hybrane" and "NeoRez". Applications include can and coil coatings, industrial coatings and adhesives. The expanded product portfolio and additional capacity are intended to meet growing demand in Europe for resins used in applications subject to stringent regulatory requirements. Alongside the installation of the new reactor line, existing facilities were modernized. These upgrades include a new truck-loading facility, a fully automated drum-filling system and a heat recovery system that enables process heat to be reused. In response to increased demand for products manufactured in Meppen, Covestro is creating additional jobs in production, filling and shipping. The company did not specify the number of new positions. The Meppen production site was established in 1956 and has been part of Covestro since 2021, when the company acquired the facility as part of its takeover of Royal DSM's "Resins & Functional Materials" business. More than 100 employees, including apprentices, manufacture polyesters, alkyds, acrylates and polyurethane dispersions for the paints, coatings and packaging industries at the site. Covestro generated sales of EUR 12.9 billion in the 2025 financial year. At the end of 2025, the group employed approximately 17,600 people worldwide, measured in full-time equivalents, and operated 46 production sites. More information: www.covestro.com |
