The US plastics recycling company Cyclyx International is to build its first Cyclyx Circularity Centre (CCC) for processing plastic waste near Houston in the state of Texas. In a press release last week, Cyclyx announced the final investment decision (FID) for the project. The planned plant will process mixed plastic waste for various mechanical and chemical recycling processes. An annual capacity of around 136,000 tonnes is planned, with completion expected in mid-2025. More than 100 jobs are to be created in the complex. According to the current press release, the companies involved in Cyclyx, ExxonMobil and LyondellBasell (LYB), are investing a total of USD 135 million in the development of the first CCC. The plastic waste processed in the plant will then primarily be supplied to the recycling plants of ExxonMobil and LYB. Cyclyx CEO Joe Vaillancourt, commented on the FID for the project: "This milestone is a testament to the real progress we are making in increasing the recyclability of plastic waste as a resource. The first CCC in Houston will serve as a blueprint that we can replicate across the U.S. to achieve our long-term goal of improving recycling opportunities for plastic waste." Last year, Cyclyx announced plans to build additional CCCs in the Gulf of Mexico and other locations in the USA. In total, the company plans to build capacities to process more than 650,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually by 2026 alone. Cyclyx was founded in December 2020 by the technology company Agilyx. The oil and petrochemicals group ExxonMobil had already acquired a direct stake in Cyclyx at the beginning of 2021. In November of this year, the chemicals group LYB then acquired a 25 percent stake in the company. Cyclyx is also working with numerous other companies from the petrochemical and plastics industries as part of a larger consortium, including T.EN, CPChem, Sabic, Dow, Ineos, Americas Styrenics, Braskem and Nova Chemicals. Cyclyx founder Agilyx is based in the Norwegian capital Oslo, while the operational business is managed from the US locations in Portsmouth (New Hampshire) and Tigard (Oregon). More information: |
