Dow: Green light for "Path2Zero" project

The US chemical company Dow is to develop a complex for the CO2-emission-free extraction and processing of ethylene in the western Canadian province of Alberta.

As the company recently announced in a press release, the Board of Directors gave the go-ahead for the investment project, known as "Path2Zero", with the final investment decision (FID). Dow plans to build a new hydrogen-fuelled ethylene cracker and expand emission-free capacity for the production of polyethylene and other ethylene derivatives at its Fort Saskatchewan site near Edmonton. There are also plans to convert and expand existing plants.

The Group expects Path2Zero to result in additional capacity for just under 1.9 million tonnes of ethylene per year and then aims to produce a total of 3.2 million tonnes of certified polyethylene and other ethylene derivatives with low or zero CO2 emissions per year. The required investments are estimated in the current announcement to total around USD 6.5 billion.

Dow CEO Jim Fitterling said: "This project serves as a leading example that industrial decarbonisation is both possible and profitable. The ability to decarbonise our facilities while driving growth is at the heart of Dow's business strategy. All of our stakeholders will benefit from this investment - creating value for our customers and shareholders, new opportunities for our employees, economic growth for the region and reduced greenhouse gas emissions for the environment."

Construction work in Fort Saskatchewan is scheduled to begin next year. The first phase of the Path2Zero project is expected to be completed in 2027, with completion of the second phase targeted for 2029. Earlier this year, Dow had already awarded the contract for the front-end engineering design (FEED) of the planned plants to industrial plant manufacturer Fluor. Linde, which is planning to build a new air separation plant in Fort Saskatchewan, will supply the technical gases required to operate the complex.
