DuPont Awards Call for Entries Announced at Sustainable Packaging Forum

DuPont Continues Sustainability Focus for 21st DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation

DuPont (www.dupont.com) has announced that, due to the critical importance of sustainability in the packaging industry, it will continue to place special emphasis on innovations that provide more sustainable packaging solutions in the company’s long-running, independently judged DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation.

In announcing the call for entries for the 21st DuPont Awards competition at the Sustainable Packaging Forum in Denver, Colo., Carolann Haznedar, vice president -- DuPont Packaging, said, “Sustainability matters to packaged goods companies and consumers. As a leader in providing sustainable solutions, DuPont is committed to supporting the journey toward sustainable packaging. With the continued special focus on innovation in sustainable packaging, the DuPont Awards program helps define sustainability, bring visibility to the achievements that are being made and broadens understanding across the value chain.”

According to Haznedar, winners of the recently concluded 20th DuPont Awards demonstrated real progress toward improved sustainability, from Kraft’s redesigned salad dressing bottle which cut weight by nearly 20 percent while improving transport efficiency, to Marks & Spencer’s renewably sourced, compostible confectionary package inserts, to Larsen Danish Seafood’s single serve ambient food packaging that helps reduce food waste. “We look forward to equally significant entries from around the world for the next competition,” Haznedar said.

Entries for the 21st DuPont Awards will be accepted until Feb. 13, 2009. Packaging designers, converters, consumer and industrial packagers, and equipment manufacturers from around the world are encouraged to enter their new product packaging developments by this date, which no longer require plastic materials as an essential component. Innovation Factors such as enhanced performance, responsible sourcing, clean production and effective recovery will be considered in selecting the winners. The prestigious international jury panel for the 21st DuPont Packaging Awards includes Tony Burns, associate director, Sustainability – Global Packaging and Device Development -- Procter & Gamble; Julian Carroll, managing director -- EUROPEN; Steph Carter, packaging sustainability director -- Unilever; Ron Cotterman, executive director of sustainability -- Sealed Air Corp; Sara Hartwell, environmental specialist -- U.S. EPA Office of Solid Waste; Masanobu Ishikawa, Ph.D. -- Graduate School of Economics, Kobe University; Kim Lymn, packaging manager -- Target Corporation; Jason Pearson, president and CEO -- GreenBlue; Mike Richmond, president and CEO -- PTIS LLC; and Anne Johnson, director -- Sustainable Packaging Coalition who will facilitate the judging.

As was the case for the 2008 awards, information about this year’s winners will be posted online at the GreenBlue/Sustainable Packaging Coalition Design Library. GreenBlue is a nonprofit institute committed to sustainability by design and is home to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, an industry working group recognized as the definitive resource for credible information about packaging sustainability.

DuPont - one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 18 years ago - has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market-driven targets for both revenue and research and development investment. The goals are tied directly to business growth, specifically to the development of safer and environmentally improved new products for key global markets.
