KraussMaffei: Multiple Kinematics Accelerates Complex Injection Molding Automation

KraussMaffei is expanding its “LRXplus” linear robot series with the “LRXplus Twin” multiple-kinematics system. Designed for complex automation tasks on injection molding machines, the system uses mechanically coupled axes to enable parallel movements and on-the-fly transfers. The “Twin X” and “Twin Z” variants are available for payloads ranging from 35 to 100 kg.

The coupled axes enable highly precise parallel movements and so-called handshake transfers between the robots. This is intended to reduce cycle times and improve the synchronization of individual process steps, particularly in multi-stage removal, assembly, sorting, and interlinking processes.

For the linear axes, KraussMaffei uses a combination of aluminum and steel. The axes are designed for high rigidity and crash resistance and are intended to prevent deformation even at maximum travel speeds. According to the manufacturer, damage resulting from collisions should largely remain superficial. The aim is to increase technical availability while reducing downtime and repair times.

The system is controlled using “smartControl MC7,” which allows up to four robots with six axes each to be centrally programmed and controlled. This means that up to 24 axes can be coordinated within a single system. Features include a shared coordinate system, an HTML5 program editor, and a handheld device with a multi-touch display for setting up complex motion sequences.

Another design change concerns the control cabinet, which is positioned at floor level on the “LRXplus Twin,” making it easier to access for servicing. A high-performance ventilation system is also designed to support operation at elevated ambient temperatures.

The linear robot can be operated either as an integrated or standalone solution. According to KraussMaffei, the system is compatible not only with the company’s current machines but also with older generations of control systems and injection molding machines from other manufacturers. Combined with various grippers, peripheral equipment, and automation cells, the multiple-kinematics system can therefore be configured for a wide range of production concepts.
