Lanxess: Price increase for Durethan high-tech plastics and synthetic monofilaments

From November 1, 2010, Perlon-Monofil GmbH is to raise its prices worldwide for synthetic monofilaments by 7-10 percent depending on the filament diameter and field of application. The reason for this price rise is the significant increase in raw material and energy costs.

Perlon-Monofil GmbH is one of five sections belonging to the Semi-Crystalline Products business unit of the specialty chemicals group LANXESS. It manufactures an extensive range of polyamide and polyester monofilament products for a wide variety of applications and markets them worldwide under the brand names Perlon, Atlas and Bayco. The plastic wires are used for the production of durable technical fabrics, cords and ropes with outstanding dimensional stability and high strength. Typical applications include rope manufacture, sports fishing, the paper and sports goods industries, and fences, bracings and guy ropes in agriculture. Products from Perlon-Monofil are noted for their weather resistance, strength, elongation properties, load-bearing capacity and overall resistance properties.

Price hikes for Durethan compounds in EMEA from October 15
On October 15, the SCP business unit increased its prices in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Durethan A (polyamide 6.6) compounds by EUR 0.25 per kilogram and for Durethan B (polyamide 6) compounds by EUR 0.15 per kilogram. The increases were necessary because of constantly rising input costs, especially for the polyamide 6.6 feedstocks and specialty additives.

Polyamides are semi-crystalline plastics noted above all for their ideal combination of properties. They are especially suitable for technical applications. High mechanical strength and stiffness go hand in hand with good electrical insulating properties, high heat and chemical resistance, good frictional and dry-running properties, and excellent wear resistance, noise absorption and vibration damping. They also offer outstanding processing characteristics.

The SCP business unit is part of LANXESS’ Performance Polymers segment, which achieved total sales of EUR 2.388 billion in fiscal 2009.
