SGT: Expansion of rPET Capacities

French plastics company SGT Group is building another facility for the production of recycled PET (rPET).

According to a company press release, the new facility is to be built at the Chalon-sur-Saône site and will have a capacity of 16,000 tonnes of rPET per year. The technology supplier is Austrian industry equipment manufacturer NGR. The new plant combines a conical twin-screw extrusion process developed by NGR with LSP (Liquid State Polycondensation) technology and is primarily designed for recycling PET flakes from used beverage bottles. The new facility is scheduled to become operational in 2028. The company did not disclose the amount of investment associated with the project in its latest announcement.

SGT already operates an rPET plant in Chalon-sur-Saône with an annual capacity of 12,000 tonnes. In addition, the company has another facility at its Rezé site near Nantes with an annual capacity of 16,000 tonnes of rPET. Once the new plant in Chalon-sur-Saône comes on stream, the group’s total capacity will increase accordingly to 44,000 tonnes of rPET per year.

SGT CEO Frédéric Mignot said: “The new plant marks another milestone on our path towards a consistent circular economy. With an annual production capacity of 44,000 tonnes, we can ensure a reliable supply of high-quality rPET for our customers. This will enable us to provide even better support to our customers in their ecological transformation.”

SGT produces a total of more than 7 billion PET and rPET preforms annually for a wide range of PET bottles. Its product portfolio also includes high-density polyethylene (HDPE) closures. In France, the group operates production facilities at its headquarters in Rezé and in Chalon-sur-Saône, as well as additional plants in Rouïba and Sétif in Algeria. Since acquiring industry company Axium Packaging last year, the group has also been manufacturing through its subsidiaries ActiPack, Loire Plastic, Lapac, Silte and KKT Kaller Kunststoff Technik at further sites in France, the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany (Kall).
