LyondellBasell: Sustainability Goals for 2030 Reduced

LyondellBasell has adjusted its climate and circularity targets for 2030 against the backdrop of changing market conditions, regulatory developments, and disciplined capital allocation. The company's strategic orientation, based on the three pillars of growing the core business, building a profitable circular and low-carbon business, and enhancing performance and culture, remains unchanged.

In the future, the company aims for a 32 percent reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to the 2020 base year. The previous target was 42 percent. In the area of circular economy, the target volume for recycled and bio-based polymers has also been adjusted: by 2030, 800,000 metric tons are to be produced and marketed annually. The previous target had been 2 million metric tons per year. In addition to its own production, the calculation includes proportionate volumes from joint ventures as well as production volumes from toll manufacturing agreements.

According to the company, progress has been made in implementing the sustainability strategy in recent years. This includes the construction of the MoReTec-1 plant in Wesseling, the first commercial-scale chemical recycling plant based on the company's proprietary MoReTec technology. Furthermore, emission reductions were implemented at various locations, including the Houston refinery, as well as efficiency increases as part of a group-wide value enhancement program.

In the area of energy supply, the company has secured projects to achieve the goal of sourcing at least 50 percent of purchased electricity—based on 2020 procurement levels—from renewable sources by 2030.

According to the company, the adjustment of the sustainability targets has no impact on existing supply obligations or commercial contracts. LyondellBasell intends to publish further details on the revised sustainability strategy in its sustainability report, which is scheduled for release in April 2026.
