Wittmann: Integrated Intelligent Drying and Conveying

WITTMANN’s (www.wittmann-robot.com) new compact DRYMAX DUAL PDC (Portable Drying Conveyor) offers intelligent drying and conveying of plastic resin to a single drying hopper and dried material to up to 2 injection molding machines. The fully integrated drying and conveying cell costs about 12% more than a single drying unit and offers up to a 25% floor space savings compared to two single units. The DUAL PDC option is available for DRYMAX dryer models C30, C60 and 100 with 30, 60 and 100 lbs./hr. of dry air capacity respectively.

The compact drying cell consists of a standard DRYMAX dryer with a single drying hopper and an additional maintenance free, 3-phase conveying blower. This blower is protected by a central, easy-to-reach filter and supplies - in vacuum mode - new material to the loader mounted on the drying hopper. The DRYMAX DUAL PDC package includes the loader on the drying hopper and the two JIT loaders for the molding machines.

Requests for material from the two Just-In-Time (JIT) loaders are served by the first-in/first-out principle whereas the selected molding machine loader is supplied by the blower in pressure mode for dry air conveying of dried material. Material requests by the JIT loaders are given highest priority to avoid any material shortage at either machine and, if necessary, automatically interrupt the conveying cycle to the drying hopper. The conveying lines can be purged after each drying cycle to avoid re-moisturization of any remaining material.

The integrated DUAL PDC offers a total material throughput of up to 350 lbs./hr. (160 kg/h), with a conveying capacity for each JIT loader of up to 175 lbs./hr. (80 kg/h). The total conveying throughput can be distributed arbitrarily to each loader according to the actual machine demand. The conveying blower can accommodate distances of 16.5’ (5 m) and height difference of 10’ (3 m) for each JIT loader.

The numerous functions of the DRYMAX DUAL PDC dryer are easily accessible from the standard WITTMANN user interface located on the front of the dryer. The uniform interface across miscellaneous peripheral equipment platforms ranging from TEMPRO temperature controllers, battery dryers, SILMAX drying hoppers to the DRYMAX and DRYMAX PDC compact line, allows trouble-free operation of the units and short training times.
