Hybrid components made of plastic-metal composite materials still represent a challenge in industrial recycling – particularly in the context of lightweight construction, electromobility, and increasing pressure for sustainability. While metallic components are economically attractive and are primarily recovered, the plastics they contain are often considered a secondary or disruptive fraction. This affects both post-consumer and post-industrial waste, such as production rejects or faulty parts. MKV GmbH Kunststoffgranulate, located in Beselich (near Limburg), is addressing this issue by establishing an automated separation and sorting plant specifically designed for plastic-metal composite fractions. Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2026. The goal is the single-grade recovery of plastics, with the metals being generated as a mixed fraction and returned to the customer upon request. Further metal sorting is carried out externally. The new line is based on existing technologies for metal separation (Sesotec) and shredding (Zeno), supplemented by several process steps such as the separation of fine particles. It is almost fully automated and designed for low personnel requirements. The expansion to include NIR and color sorting is planned and will be implemented depending on demand. With the new infrastructure, MKV intends to meet the growing industry demand for solutions for the recycling of complex hybrid components. Previously, such material streams could only be processed on a smaller scale. Through this investment, the company aims to set a clear signal for the preservation of plastics as a valuable material and thus contribute to resource efficiency in plastic processing.
