Chopped and milled carbon fibres which improve the performance of thermoplastic polymers are a recent addition to Dreychem’s product portfolio. Image: Dreychem The average length of the milled carbon fibres is 90 µm with a bulk density of 250 kg/m³. Among the main applications of these fibres, which are delivered in packages of 10 kg, are compounds with high performance polymers such as liquid crystal polymers (LCP), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or polyphenylene oxide (PPO), providing increased conductivity as well as improved friction and wear properties. The chopped carbon fibres are delivered in packages of 20 kg with standard lengths of app. 3 mm to 6 mm. Customer specific, mainly higher lengths are available upon request. Depending on the polymer matrix to be reinforced, sizing agents are epoxy and/or polyurethane. Accordingly, applications of these fibres range from polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymers (ABS), nylon (PA), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polycarbonate (PC) and polyoxymethylene (POM) through to polyphenylene oxide (PPO). The mechanical properties of the basic (PAN) filaments range from 3,400 MPa to 4,500 MPa for tensile strength and from 230 GPa to 290 GPa for stiffness.
