Wittmann: Quality Monitoring through PCCL In-Line Inspection

Appearance has become one of the main features of an increasing number of products. Particularly products from the new economy like mobile phones or LCDmonitors but also interior parts of cars face high demands on their surface appearance. Therefore, there is an industrial requirement to inspect and, if necessary, to enhance consumer products during the manufacturing processes.

A novel methodology for the advanced in-line measurement of surface defect perceptibility was developed at the Polymer Competence Center Leoben GmbH (PCCL). This methodology addresses the given issue by including knowledge about human perception behavior in the mathematical measurement models. By this means, results are close to human vision and they are generated swift. They are reproducible without any distorting subjective influence of human evaluation.

An inspection system unit for the measurement of the visual perceptibility of surface defects is demonstrated during the K 2010 using the example of a sink mark. Test samples are manufactured by WITTMANN BATTENFELD on an EcoPower 110/350 applying the variothermic process BFMOLD™. For inspection samples are automatically positioned by a WITTMANN robot W811 and a pneumatic slide. Images are captured by using a CCD-camera and processed using a mathematical model which allows predictions for the visibility of the sink mark. Variation of process parameters during manufacture of the samples shows the susceptibility of the samples’ appearance to even slight changes in the process. The inspection system detects visibly perceivable defects and triggers the sorting out of defective parts. Further detectable defect types are e.g. weld lines, glossinhomogeneity and tiger stripes.
