Ciba: Recycling additives for plastics re-enter high-value applications

Swiss chemical company Ciba Specialty Chemicals Inc. (www.cibasc.com) a leading worldwide producer of specialty additives, offers a broad range of agents for all life stages of polymers and plastics. For plastics recycling, Ciba Specialty Chemicals recently developed additive-packages which enable plastics to re-enter the high-value applications of virgin materials. The economic value of such modified recyclates will be significant.

Ciba^® RECYCLOSTAB^® 411 increases long-term thermal stability of recycled HDPE, PP and polymer blends. Applications are for containers, bottle crates, bottles or waste bins and plastic profiles for the construction industry.

Ciba^® RECYCLOSTAB^® 451 AR has been developed to re-establish processing conditions and long-term thermal stability of recycled PP and PP-blends with other plastics at the property level of virgin polymers. Furthermore it helps to neutralize acids and impurities of the first life of the plastic. Major use is found in recycling of battery cases and PP-blends of unknown origins.

Ciba^® RECYCLOSORB^® 550 combines weatherability with improved processing and thermal properties. It makes recyclates from HDPE, LDPE and PP sources re-usable for a new life in outdoor applications such as bottle crates, garbage bins and plastic pallets.

Ciba^® RECYCLOBLEND^® 660 has been designed to neutralize remnant lacquer particles and fillers, which would severely influence mechanical properties of polyolefinic recyclates. This additivepackage is can return PP/EPDM and PC/PBT recyclates from bumpers and other automotive parts into their original applications.
