IKV: Precision optics – Focus on plastics

“Precision optics – Focus on plastics”. Under this heading, the Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV, www.ikv-aachen.de) at RWTH Aachen University is presenting the entire development process for an optical injection moulded part, starting with the initial idea for the product and proceeding via the configuration of the production processes and means of production right through to quality assurance.

A particularly high-performance plastic optics application will be on show: the replication of optics with free-form surfaces. These are optical components which have surfaces displaying no symmetry whatsoever. The specially tailored optical free-form surface can deflect light in a specially targeted manner. This means that the illuminance can be divided up at will, with virtually no loss through apertures, such as over a projection surface.

Injection moulding processes for the production of plastic optics rank as key technologies for the 21st century. The use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are highly advantageous thanks to their low energy consumption and long service life, can also be greatly expanded in automotive applications, such as for vehicle headlamps. Further applications would be conceivable in medical technology, the biosciences, IT and communications technology, and production engineering.
