LyondellBasell: Technologies licensed for polyolefin complex in China

The chemicals group LyondellBasell (LYB) will be the technology supplier for a new polyolefin complex of the Chinese company Dongming Shenghai.

LYB announced this in a press release at the end of November. According to the press release, the US group will licence the high-pressure pipe process "Lupotech T" for the production of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) as well as the low-pressure processes "Hostalen ACP" and "Spheripol" for the production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) respectively. Dongming Shenghai will also receive the "Avant Z501", "Avant Z509-1" and "Avant ZN" catalysts from LYB.

The new complex will be built at the Heze site in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong and will have a capacity of 200,000 tonnes of EVA, 400,000 tonnes of HDPE and 350,000 tonnes of PP per year. No information is available on the level of investment associated with Dongming Shenghai's project or the value of the order for LYB.

LYB manager Neil Nadalin said: "We are delighted that Dongming Shenghai has awarded LyondellBasell this substantial licence to produce a wide range of polyolefins. Dongming Shenghai's technology selection will enable the company to produce long-life PP and HDPE lace products using LYB's low pressure Spheripol and Hostalen ACP processes. In addition, the company can actively contribute to the global energy transition with Lupotech T process technology for EVA production."

LYB was last commissioned in China in August by the company Jiangsu Fenghai High-Tech Materials with the licensing of the EVA process "Lupotech T" for a new plant at the Lianyungang site in Jiangsu province.

LyondellBasell, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is one of the world's largest chemical companies and is recognised as a leading producer of polyolefins, among other things. In the first nine months of the 2023 financial year, the Group, which has administrative centres in Houston, London and Rotterdam, generated sales totalling USD 31.18 billion, EBITDA of USD 3.87 billion and net profit of USD 1.94 billion.
