Lummus Technology: Investment in pyrolysis start-up Resynergi

US-based Lummus Technology is participating as an investor in the financing of the technology company Resynergi.

In a press release, Lummus announced a major investment in Resynergi without going into details of the financial commitment. However, Resynergi announced in a press release the closing of a financing round led by Lummus and the investment fund Transitions First (T1ST) totalling USD 6.4 million.

According to the information provided, the funds will be used for further testing and application of the CMAP pyrolysis process developed by Resynergi for the recycling of plastic waste. CMAP (Continuous Microwave Assisted Pyrolysis) is a microwave-assisted pyrolysis process that enables the recycling of polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS). The advantages of the technology include its modular design, good scalability, high energy efficiency and a very short reaction time when breaking down the plastic molecules compared to conventional pyrolysis processes.

Lummus CEO Leon de Bruyn explained: "Lummus is not only investing in Resynergi, we are also partnering with true game changers to develop and scale sustainable solutions that advance the circular economy. Combining our global licensing expertise with Resynergi's proven CMAP technology will help us accelerate the transformation of plastic waste into high-value, reusable materials. I also look forward to working with Resynergi's team and board to reduce the carbon footprint of conventional plastics production and meet the growing demand for recycled plastics."

Resynergi currently operates a CMAP reactor with a daily recycling capacity of 1.25 tonnes at its Santa Rosa site north of San Francisco. According to the latest press release, the company is planning to build four more plants of this size at various locations in the USA.

Based in Houston, Texas, Lummus Technology develops and licences processes for the petrochemical industry and also supplies catalysts, equipment and other services. The company was formed from the former technology division of the US industrial equipment manufacturer CB&I following its merger with McDermott International in May 2018.
