Amandina Bumi Nusantara: Recycled PET for Coca-Cola's first 100 per cent rPET bottles in Indonesia - PET recycling systems from Starlinger

In June 2023, Coca-Cola Indonesia, in collaboration with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia (CCEP Indonesia), launched the first bottles made from 100 per cent rPET (excluding caps and labels) for its most popular soft drink brands. The recycled PET comes from Amandina Bumi Nusantara, a pioneer in the Indonesian recycling industry. The company operates a plastic recycling plant outside Jakarta with two Starlinger "recoStar PET HC iV+" bottle-to-bottle recycling systems and processes 3,000 tonnes of used PET bottles per month. Two types of transparent rPET granulate in bottle quality are produced, one for carbonated drinks and one for still water. The company also supplies hot-washed flakes in transparent and light blue colours.

The two PET recycling plants were installed in autumn 2022 by local technicians from Starlinger's Indonesian subsidiary PT Starlinger SEA. The Starlinger team in the Surabaya branch takes care of machine installations, service and maintenance work as well as spare parts orders for Starlinger customers in Southeast Asia and provides rapid technical support if required.

Responsible procurement
As the machine manufacturer further explains, Amandina supports companies in achieving their sustainability goals with recycled PET from sustainably sourced input material at competitive prices. For the collection of post-consumer PET bottles, Amandina Bumi Nusantara works together with the Mahija Parahita Nusantara Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by CCEP Indonesia and Dynapack Asia. As in many other Asian countries, over 90 per cent of plastic waste in Indonesia is collected by waste pickers in the informal sector - called "Recycling Heroes" by Amandina and Mahija. The remaining ten per cent is collected via formal systems such as waste banks and other organised collection methods.

CCEP Indonesia has set itself the goal of making 100 per cent of its packaging recyclable by 2025 and producing at least 50 per cent of its plastic bottles from rPET. For 2030, the company has set itself the goal of collecting and recycling 100 per cent of its plastic bottles and eliminating the use of virgin material in bottle production.

In addition to PET, other types of plastic such as PE bottles and PP cups are also collected and recycled in Indonesia. The government is working on the development of strategies and action plans for the management of plastic waste and the promotion of recycling practices. In 2019, a regulation was passed with the aim of reducing the amount of waste by 30 per cent by 2029. However, implementation of the targets is inconsistent. Private companies are often involved in supporting recycling initiatives and play an important role in raising awareness of environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices. This can include both financial support and the provision of resources and expertise to implement recycling programmes, particularly in partnership with local communities and organisations. For example, Coca-Cola and Dynapack Asia support the social activities of the aforementioned responsible sourcing platform Mahija Parahita Nusantara.

Certified food quality
According to further information, PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara is the first PET recycling company to receive the SNI Marking Product Certificate (SPPT) from the national standardisation authority (BSN) for the implementation of the Indonesian national standard (SNI) 8424:2017. This standard, introduced by the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, serves to protect consumers and ensures that products made from recycled PET meet quality standards. It includes strict qualification stages, accurate sampling, testing and product evaluation procedures to ensure that the PET recycling process fulfils the desired safety, sustainability and requirement criteria. Since its launch in 2017, it has become an important reference in the PET recycling industry. In addition, Amandina Bumi Nusantara fulfils the standards of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), Halal and FSSC 22000, which allow the use of rPET in food and beverage packaging.
