Technip Energies: Plant constructor hands over cracker in Long Son

The French industrial plant constructor Technip Energies (T.EN) has handed over a new cracker at the Long Son site in southern Vietnam to the client Long Son Petrochemicals (LSP).

According to a press release, the plant, which is part of a petrochemical complex developed by LSP in the province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, recently passed final acceptance. The cracker has a capacity of 950,000 tonnes of ethylene, 400,000 tonnes of propylene and up to 107,000 tonnes of butadiene per year. Both naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can be used as feedstock.

T.EN has licensed the technology for the ethylene production and was also commissioned in 2018 to plan, equip, construct and commission the cracker. The plant was already put into operation at the end of last year and intensively tested at full capacity in the following months.

In addition to the cracker, the Long Son petrochemical complex includes plants for the production of a total of around 1.3 million tonnes of polyethylene (HDPE, LLDPE) and polypropylene (PP) per year. The technologies for polyolefin production were licensed by Mitsui Chemicals (HDPE and PP) and Univation Technology (LLDPE). LSP has put the total cost of developing the Long Son complex at over USD 5.1 billion.

Long Son Petrochemicals was originally founded as a joint venture between the Thai company SCG Chemicals (SCGC), Qatar Petroleum and the Vietnamese state oil and gas group PetroVietnam, but since 2018 SCGC has controlled all the shares in the project company.

Technip Energies was formed at the beginning of 2021 as a spin-off of several divisions of the French plant engineering group TechnipFMC. Listed on Euronext Paris, the company operates in 35 countries worldwide and employs a total of around 15,000 people.
