The Lego Group has completed a two-year expansion program at its manufacturing facility in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, increasing the site’s total production capacity by 30%. The official inauguration took place on 30 September 2025. With the expansion, the factory now employs more than 4,300 people, including seasonal staff, making it one of the largest employers in the region. The expansion includes additional manufacturing halls, warehouse space, and administrative facilities, doubling the factory’s footprint from 120,000 to 262,000 square meters since its original opening in 2014. The site now contains over 1,000 injection moulding machines and 73 packaging lines, covering all major production steps from moulding to warehousing. This makes Nyíregyháza the second-largest Lego production facility worldwide. In parallel with capacity expansion, the company is investing in sustainable energy infrastructure. A geothermal heating system is being installed to replace non-renewable natural gas and is scheduled to be fully operational by 2028. Two geothermal wells have already been drilled to a depth of over two kilometers, with supporting infrastructure to follow over the next two years. The initiative contributes to the Lego Group’s goal to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 37% by 2032 compared to 2019 levels. Additional sustainability measures at the Nyíregyháza site include expanded solar energy generation and biodiversity programs. Three on-site solar parks currently host more than 24,000 panels, delivering 8.61 MWp by the end of 2025. This capacity is expected to exceed 17 MWp by late 2026 with the installation of an additional 11,000 panels. The company has also dedicated 50,000 square meters of land to ecological initiatives, planting over 46,000 drought-resistant trees and shrubs as well as bee-friendly vegetation. The factory maintains close engagement with local communities through education and social initiatives and has been recognized as one of Hungary’s most attractive workplaces. Lego Manufacturing Nyíregyháza is one of six global Lego production sites and plays a key role in meeting product demand in Europe and other regions. More information: www.lego.com |
