The Japanese chemical company Mitsui Chemicals has fully acquired the catalyst manufacturer Nippon Aluminum Alkyls (NAA). In a press release at the beginning of the month, Mitsui Chemicals announced the acquisition of all NAA shares from Ketjen Netherlands Holdings, a subsidiary of the US specialty chemical company Albemarle. No details were provided regarding the financial volume or other particulars of the transaction. Mitsui Chemicals had previously already controlled 50% of NAA. Nippon Aluminum Alkyls produces organometallic compounds such as aluminum alkyls and their derivatives, which are primarily used as catalysts in the production of polyethylene (HDPE, LLDPE), polypropylene (PP), and other polymers. Products include Triethylaluminium (TEA), Triisobutylaluminium (TIBA), Diethylaluminium chloride (DEAC), Ethylaluminium sesquichloride (EASC), and Ethylaluminium dichloride (EADC), among others. Founded in 1968, the company has a production plant in the immediate vicinity of Mitsui Chemicals' site in Osaka, Japan. According to the current announcement, with the complete takeover of NAA, Mitsui Chemicals is continuing to implement its long-term business plan, which envisions optimizing its portfolio and developing the group into a global specialty chemical provider. Tokyo-based Mitsui Chemicals reported an 8% year-on-year decrease in sales to 415 billion JPY (2.356 billion EUR) for the first quarter of the 2025/26 fiscal year. Operating income fell by 53% to 13 billion JPY (74 million EUR), while net profit shrank by 96% to 700 million JPY (4 million EUR).
