Changhua Chemical: Chinese company starts production of PCE polyols

Chinese company Changhua Chemical has commissioned a plant for the production of polycarbonate ether polyols (PCE polyols).

This was announced in recent days by the British company Econic Technologies, whose CO2-based polyol production technology is being used at the new plant. According to the announcement, the facility at the Lianyungang site in Jiangsu Province, eastern China, is expected to initially produce around 80,000 tonnes of PCE polyols this year. A further expansion of production capacities is planned in the coming years.

The PCE polyols produced by Changhua Chemical are marketed under the brand name “Carnol” and are used in the production of polyurethane foams, coatings, elastomers and other applications. The use of PCE polyols offers both environmental benefits and improved performance. For example, PUR foams made with these materials have a lower carbon footprint than conventional materials and improved load-bearing and tensile-strength properties.

In the announcement, Econic CEO Keith Wiggins said: “The commissioning of this plant is a milestone for the chemical industry. It demonstrates that the use of captured CO2 is industrially mature. Brand owners and manufacturers across the entire value chain can now reduce their carbon footprint by using CO2 as a sustainable feedstock. Together with Changhua Chemical, we are creating value from something that was once considered waste and paving the way for the broad adoption of this technology in the polyurethane market and beyond.”

Based in Nether Alderley near Manchester, Econic Technologies develops catalysts and process technologies for using CO2 instead of petrochemical feedstocks in plastics production. The polyol production process used by Changhua Chemical has already also been licensed to US-based Monument Chemical. In addition, Econic has signed corresponding memoranda of understanding with Manali Petrochemicals in India, Sanyo Chemical in Japan, PTT Global Chemical in Thailand, and Chimcomplex in Romania.
