Weiss Kunststoffverarbeitung: Automation of Downstream Injection Molding Processes

Weiss Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH & Co. KG is increasing its investment in the automation of downstream injection molding processes during the current fiscal year. According to the company, a significant portion of the investment volume of around €1 million will be allocated not only to four new injection molding machines but also to automated inspection, assembly, and packaging solutions.

The additional injection molding machines are primarily intended to support projects currently ramping up. At the same time, Weiss is expanding automated production lines and manufacturing cells that integrate, among other functions, 100% inspection of very small injection-molded parts, machine vision systems, assembly and marking processes, and packaging operations.

In a current project, automated cells for surface inspection using machine vision and for packaging are being integrated directly into the injection molding process. This enables automation of the entire workflow from part ejection to final packaging. A barcode-based label printing system is designed to prevent mix-ups involving packaging labels.

Weiss already uses robot-assisted visual inspection systems. These machine vision systems monitor, among other things, surface quality and product markings. The company also employs collaborative robots that work alongside assembly personnel without protective fencing and have been engineered internally.

A key investment focus for 2026 is end-of-line automation, particularly in the packaging area. In addition to loading reusable containers, the company plans to further automate the folding, provision, filling, and sealing of cardboard boxes.

Managing Partner Jürgen B. Weiss emphasized that the company is continuing to expand its internal capabilities in equipment planning and automation. At the same time, he noted that automation remains dependent on production volumes and economic viability. Smaller to medium-sized production runs involving manual operations are manufactured, among other locations, at the company’s plant in Győr, Hungary.

Weiss has extensive experience in the project management and mass production of complex plastic components for passenger cars and mobile machinery. Its in-house expertise in the planning, programming, and commissioning of robotic systems forms a central pillar of the company’s automation strategy.
