Evonik has opened an application center for anion exchange membranes (AEM) in Shanghai. The facility is the company's first AEM technology center in Asia and is intended to support the development, testing, and industrial deployment of its "Duraion" membrane technology for hydrogen production. The center's primary focus is the testing and optimization of "Duraion" membranes, which are manufactured in Marl, Germany, under real operating conditions. The goal is to adapt membrane integration into electrolysis systems to meet local customer requirements and accelerate their use in industrial applications. The new center features specialized laboratories and demonstration facilities for AEM electrolysis. These include electrolyzer test benches that enable the evaluation of membrane performance and long-term durability. The infrastructure covers the entire validation process, from single-cell testing to demonstration-scale systems. In addition, the site will serve as a collaboration platform for customers, technology partners, and research institutions. Together, they will address challenges across the entire AEM electrolysis value chain. AEM electrolysis enables the production of green hydrogen from water. Compared with other electrolysis technologies, it is considered potentially more cost-effective because it can utilize less expensive materials. It also offers a high degree of flexibility in handling fluctuating electricity supplies from renewable energy sources. With the new center, Evonik is strengthening its presence in the Chinese hydrogen market, which is regarded as one of the world's most important growth markets for climate-neutral hydrogen applications and electrolysis technologies. The company expects faster development cycles for its membrane technology as well as a deeper understanding of complete AEM electrolysis systems. "Duraion" membranes are based on Evonik's expertise in polymer chemistry, membrane technology, and electrochemical materials, and are already being manufactured on a commercial scale at the Marl site.
