Lubrizol + Grasim: New CPVC Plant Opens in India

US-based chemical company Lubrizol and India’s Grasim Industries have inaugurated the first phase of their new chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) production facility.

According to a press release, the plant at Grasim’s Vilayat site in the western Indian state of Gujarat initially has a production capacity of around 50,000 tonnes of CPVC per year. Construction of the complex began in autumn 2023. At that time, Lubrizol and Grasim announced plans to develop total CPVC production capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes annually at the Vilayat site. The facility uses a CPVC manufacturing process developed by Lubrizol.

For Lubrizol, the opening of the plant marks another milestone in a broader initiative to expand CPVC production in India. In recent months, the company has also opened a new technology and service centre in Pune and expanded CPVC compounding capacity at its Dahej site. Previous reports valued investments in these projects at approximately USD 150 million in total.

In the current announcement, Lubrizol executive Abhishek Shrivastav stated: “Lubrizol introduced its CPVC technology to India more than two decades ago. Since then, we have witnessed strong market growth alongside the country’s economic development. With the commissioning of the new Vilayat facility, we are further strengthening our local manufacturing capabilities in India. This investment underscores our long-term commitment to the Indian market.”

CPVC is primarily processed into materials for water supply pipes, sprinkler systems and piping for chemical processing plants. The Vilayat facility is intended to serve growing demand from the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Lubrizol is headquartered in Wickliffe, Ohio, USA, and employs more than 7,000 people worldwide across over 100 locations. The company produces and processes thermoplastic polyurethanes and other polymer-based materials for industrial applications, CPVC piping systems, lubricants, fuel additives and a range of specialty chemicals.

Grasim Industries, Lubrizol’s partner in the project, is part of the Indian conglomerate Aditya Birla Group. The company manufactures chemical fibres, textiles, epoxy resins, caustic soda and various chlorine derivatives, as well as paints and cement.
