U.S.-based engineering company KBR has entered into a partnership with UK technology company ReVentas in the field of plastic recycling. According to the two companies, the agreement was signed at the end of June. Its objective is to further commercialize ReVentas’ dissolution-based process for recycling plastic waste. Under the partnership, KBR will support the global licensing, engineering implementation, and scaling of the technology. ReVentas’ process uses a solvent-based dissolution method to remove colorants, contaminants, and other non-polymeric components from polyethylene and polypropylene waste, enabling the production of virgin-quality recycled materials. ReVentas CEO Tom Rose commented: “We chose KBR as our engineering and licensing partner because of its outstanding technical expertise, global reach, and proven track record in the large-scale deployment of chemical and recycling technologies.” KBR also views the ReVentas process as a complementary technology to existing mechanical and chemical plastic recycling methods. Hari Ravindran, President of KBR Technology Solutions, said: “This process enables the cost-effective recovery of high-quality, virgin-grade polymers from difficult-to-recycle post-consumer plastics while delivering an environmental footprint comparable to that of mechanical recycling. Equally important, it uses a solvent that is approved for food-contact packaging and subject to clearly defined regulatory limits.” Headquartered in Livingston near Edinburgh, ReVentas plans to build its first large-scale recycling facility with an annual capacity of approximately 10,000 metric tons of recycled HDPE (rHDPE). According to the latest announcement, the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the plant has already been completed, with commissioning expected by the end of 2028. In the long term, the company aims to develop recycling capacity for up to 750,000 metric tons of plastic waste per year. More information: www.kbr.com, www.reventas.co.uk |
