BASF has obtained ISCC PLUS certification for its engineering plastics production facilities in Minhang near Shanghai and at its Verbund site in Zhanjiang, in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. This enables the company to manufacture plastics at both sites using renewable or recycled feedstocks accounted for through a mass balance approach. The certification confirms the sustainable origin of the raw materials used and their traceable allocation throughout the value chain. Under the mass balance approach, conventional and alternative raw materials are processed together. The proportion of certified feedstocks is then mathematically allocated to specific products and independently documented. With the certification, BASF is expanding its range of locally produced, ISCC PLUS-certified engineering plastics in China. The products are aimed in particular at companies in the automotive, electrical and electronics industries. These sectors are increasingly facing the challenge of meeting regulatory requirements for the use of sustainable materials and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their products. According to the company, the certified materials are intended to enable the traceable accounting of renewable and recycled feedstock shares without altering the technical properties of the plastics. The certification applies to the feedstocks used and their allocation, rather than to the physical separation of materials during production. BASF also sees the local certification as an opportunity to improve the supply of materials with corresponding sustainability attributes to customers in China. Production in Shanghai and Zhanjiang is expected to enable shorter supply chains and greater regional availability. The two sites are part of a gradual expansion of ISCC PLUS certification within the Performance Materials division in the Asia-Pacific region. BASF had previously certified sites in South Korea and Malaysia. According to the company, nearly 70 percent of its Performance Materials sites in the region now hold ISCC PLUS certification.
