Saipem: Italian Engineering company plans plastics recycling facility for Aduro in the Netherlands

Canadian company Aduro Clean Technologies has commissioned Italian industrial plant engineering company Saipem to carry out preliminary engineering work for its new plastics recycling facility in the Netherlands.

In a recent press release, Aduro announced that the contract had been awarded to the Italian company. The facility will be built at the Chemelot industrial park in Sittard-Geleen, in the southern Dutch province of Limburg, and is intended to serve as the first larger-scale demonstration plant for Aduro’s Hydrochemolytic technology, with a capacity to recycle around 10,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year.

Saipem’s scope of work includes initial engineering and procurement services for the project. According to the press release, this includes reviewing the Process Design Package, optimizing key equipment packages, carrying out the initial integration of utility systems, and further refining capital cost estimates. Experience and data from the operation of a pilot plant will also be incorporated into the next stages of planning. If this phase is completed successfully, Aduro intends to continue its collaboration with Saipem through Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), detailed engineering, procurement and construction, all the way through to commissioning of the facility.

The Hydrochemolytic technology developed by Aduro uses water as the primary active agent in a chemical recycling process for plastic waste, bitumen, and heavy oil. To date, the company has been testing the technology at a pilot plant at its headquarters in London, near Toronto, in the Canadian province of Ontario. Earlier this year, the decision was made to locate the first larger-scale Hydrochemolytic facility in Sittard-Geleen (see plasticker News dated February 2, 2026).
