Hindalco: New 30,000-Tonne ATH Plant for Halogen-Free Flame Retardancy

Hindalco Industries Limited has commissioned a new production facility for precipitated aluminium trihydrate (PPT ATH) in Belagavi, Karnataka, India. According to the company, it is the first facility of its kind in India. The first phase has an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, with an expansion to 60,000 tonnes planned.

PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) is used as a halogen-free flame retardant in applications including HFFR (Halogen Free Flame Retardant) cable compounds, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and coatings. In cable applications, aluminium trihydrate is designed to reduce flame spread and smoke generation without releasing halogen-containing acid gases in the event of a fire. Hindalco markets the material under the name "InnoSafe".

The new plant expands Hindalco's specialty alumina and hydrate business. According to the company, the capacity of the first phase is expected to cover almost the entire current demand of India's wire and cable industry for this type of material in HFFR applications. Drivers include stricter fire safety requirements and growing demand from infrastructure, electrical and e-mobility applications. In India, the IS 17048:2018 standard is also supporting the adoption of halogen-free flame-retardant cables.

According to Hindalco, the technology for the plant was developed in-house. Automated process controls and integrated production are intended in particular to ensure consistent raw material and product quality. The PPT ATH is produced at Hindalco's refinery in Belagavi.

According to Hindalco, the plant is powered entirely by renewable energy from biomass, solar and wind sources. For its Belagavi refinery, the company reports a greenhouse gas intensity of 0.44 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of alumina for the current 2025/26 financial year.

Hindalco produces more than 120 grades of non-metallurgical specialty aluminas, supplying industries including refractories, ceramics, cables, batteries and electronics. With the new PPT ATH production facility, the company is expanding its portfolio particularly for highly filled, halogen-free flame-retardant polymer applications.
