Romira is expanding its materials portfolio for medical technology with two further-developed compounds based on PA/ASA and PC/PBT. According to the company, which announced the materials ahead of Fakuma 2026, they are intended for applications requiring high mechanical performance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance and halogen-free flame retardancy.The new PA/ASA compound is reinforced with 15 percent glass fibres. This is designed to increase stiffness and dimensional stability. Compared with conventional PA systems, the material has lower water absorption, according to the company, which is intended to improve dimensional accuracy under changing environmental conditions. The flame-retardant system is halogen-free and PFAS-free. The compound achieves a UL 94 V-0 rating at a specimen thickness of 1.5 mm. For the further-developed PC/PBT compound, the focus was on improving flow properties, mechanical performance and processability. Colour stability has also been optimised. The aim is to achieve more stable processing over longer flow paths and residence times while maintaining consistent component quality. According to Romira, both compounds are designed to provide high chemical resistance to cleaning agents and disinfectants. Other stated properties include high surface quality, good UV resistance, high heat resistance and the option of customer-specific pre-colouring. Both materials are specified as providing halogen-free flame retardancy in accordance with UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm. The materials are intended to serve as alternatives to existing ABS-FR and PC/ABS-FR materials in a wide range of applications. According to the company, existing moulds can often continue to be used. This may allow a material change without fundamental modifications to existing injection moulding tools. Romira cites technical components, housings and covers that are regularly exposed to cleaning and disinfection processes as typical areas of application. These include diagnostic equipment, laboratory and clinical equipment as well as components for medical devices such as operating theatre lights. With the two new developments, Romira is targeting applications in particular where chemical resistance, flame retardancy, dimensional stability and processability need to be combined. Of particular technical relevance is the possibility of using PA/ASA and PC/PBT blends as material alternatives in existing component and tooling concepts.
