Rowa Masterbatch: NIR-Reflective Black Masterbatch Designed to Reduce Heating of Plastic Components

Rowa Masterbatch GmbH has developed a deep-black masterbatch that reflects radiation in the near-infrared (NIR) range. As the company announced ahead of Fakuma 2026, the material solution is designed to reduce the heating of black plastic surfaces exposed to sunlight while at the same time providing a colour appearance that, according to the company, is comparable to carbon-black-based systems.

Conventional black pigments absorb a large proportion of solar radiation, including radiation in the NIR range. As a result, components and underlying parts can heat up significantly. According to Rowa Masterbatch, IR-reflective black pigments already available on the market can, by contrast, exhibit a brownish or greenish tint. The newly developed material is intended to combine high NIR reflectance with a deep-black appearance.

The masterbatch is tailored to the specific customer requirements and polymer used. The company cites polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polyamide (PA), among others, as suitable carrier materials. The manufacturer did not provide information in its announcement on the temperature reduction achieved, NIR reflectance, dosage levels or test conditions.

According to the company, the reduced heat absorption can lower the thermal stress on components. Rowa Masterbatch cites potential benefits including a reduced tendency to deform and age, longer service life, lower surface temperatures on touchable parts and reduced cooling requirements.

The company sees potential applications in construction and outdoor uses such as roofing and carport elements, covers, street furniture and garden furniture. Other possible applications include exterior vehicle components, motorhome cladding, charging infrastructure, housings for outdoor electrical equipment, protective covers, as well as garden equipment and other consumer goods for outdoor use.
