Albis: Focus on Material Selection, Regulation and PFAS-Free Material Options

Albis Distribution GmbH & Co. KG will present material solutions for applications in the Mobility, Healthcare, Electrical & Electronics, and Consumer & Construction sectors at Fakuma 2026. The focus will be on selecting thermoplastic materials based on technical, regulatory and economic requirements, as well as on assessing current and upcoming regulations.

Depending on the application, Albis considers factors including chemical resistance, flame retardancy, electrical properties, design requirements, processability and documented suitability. To this end, the distributor combines its material portfolio with application-specific consulting and regulatory assessment.

One key focus is on regulatory developments affecting material selection and product development. These include the proposed EU-wide restriction on PFAS, requirements for food-contact and drinking-water applications, automotive and packaging regulations such as ELV and PPWR, as well as requirements concerning environmental information and environmental claims in connection with the “EmpCo” Directive.

Among the possible options highlighted by Albis are ISCC PLUS-certified, mass-balanced materials and materials containing post-consumer recyclate. Such solutions may be particularly relevant for applications that are expected to be affected by stricter future requirements relating to circularity and the use of recycled content. Technical and environmental product data are intended to support the evaluation and documentation of material selection.

In the field of PFAS, Albis will showcase various PFAS-free and NIA-PFAS (“not intentionally added”) solutions from material manufacturers at Fakuma 2026. This is in response to the planned regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the European Union. For applications in which PFAS-containing additives have traditionally been used, initial alternatives are already available or are currently under development.

As one application example, Albis cites gears for airport baggage handling systems. The components are made from a PFAS-free “Ultraform” POM grade from BASF. The two-gear plastic design replaces a metal version and is engineered for low wear and abrasion as well as reduced noise levels. At the same time, the material solution eliminates the need for conventional PFAS-containing additives.
