Engel: Virtual assistant transfers approved process changes to the machine control system

At Fakuma 2026, Engel will present an enhanced version of its “inject AI” solution. The “Engel Virtual Assistant” (EVA) answers freely formulated questions about the current production process and, following confirmation by the operating personnel, can transfer approved changes to the machine control system. The system will be demonstrated at the trade fair on an autonomous injection moulding cell.

EVA processes questions submitted by text or voice, taking the relevant machine and production order context into account. To do so, the assistant combines current data with Engel’s machine, process and service expertise, explains potential correlations and recommends actions. A new feature enables prepared changes to be transferred to the control system in a controlled manner following explicit approval by the user. Responsibility for approving the changes therefore remains with the operating personnel.

The technical foundation is the “Engel AI Interface”. It provides approved AI applications with machine information in a structured, context-specific format, using the “Model Context Protocol” (MCP), among other technologies. The interface is optionally available for new Engel and Wintec injection moulding cells. Existing machines equipped with “CC300” or “C3” control systems can be retrofitted.

With this solution, Engel aims to support troubleshooting, process optimisation and the provision of specialist knowledge in production operations. This is particularly relevant when no specialist is immediately available in the event of a malfunction. In addition to answering knowledge-based queries, EVA is therefore designed to prepare specific measures tailored to the machine’s current status.

The application presented at Fakuma 2026 forms part of a planned AI ecosystem for increasingly automated and self-regulating injection moulding processes. According to Engel, further use cases are being developed and validated jointly with customers and selected partners. In the long term, the concept also aims to enable largely unmanned operation.
