Schütz: New IBC plant at BASF’s Ludwigshafen site scheduled to start operations in 2027

Schütz GmbH & Co. KGaA began construction of a new production and logistics site for intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) in Ludwigshafen on September 14, 2026. The investment volume exceeds €40 million. Commissioning is scheduled for summer 2027.

The new facility is being built on an area of around 20,000 square meters directly adjacent to BASF SE’s main site. Plans include production areas for IBCs, a packaging warehouse, as well as office and staff facilities. According to Schütz, around 60 jobs are initially expected to be created, with further expansion stages potentially increasing this number to as many as 100.

A key focus of the project is the local supply of the BASF site and other industrial customers in the Rhine-Neckar region. Order processing, production planning and deliveries to unloading points at BASF are to be linked via a digitally controlled IT infrastructure. According to the company, the direct connection between the Schütz plant and the neighboring BASF site is expected to eliminate around 1.5 million truck kilometers per year.

According to Schütz, the plant will be designed for energy-efficient production and logistics processes. The facility will use, among other equipment, proprietary systems and machinery from the company’s competence center in Selters. Part of the site’s electricity demand is to be covered by a photovoltaic system.

The plant will also be integrated into Schütz’s existing closed-loop system. This includes the collection, reconditioning, reuse and recycling of used industrial packaging. In this way, the company is combining the expansion of its production capacity with a stronger regional circular economy for packaging.

According to the companies, Schütz and BASF have been working together since the 1960s. The new site expands this supplier relationship by adding dedicated production and logistics infrastructure in the immediate vicinity of BASF’s main Ludwigshafen site.
