Wittmann Expands Automation Portfolio with R9 Control and WX253 Robot Automation – New control platform and compact linear robot

Wittmann will highlight its new “R9” robot control system and “WX253” linear robot at Fakuma 2026. The “R9” serves as a central control and communication platform for connected production cells, while the “WX253” adds a more compact model with a payload capacity of up to 35 kg to the company’s WX robot range.

The “R9” can control not only the robot but also additional automation-cell components, reducing the need for separate control units for peripheral equipment. Up to twelve servo axes can be integrated, with analog and digital inputs and outputs available for further automation devices. An OPC UA interface is fitted as standard for connection to higher-level communication and production systems.

The system is operated via a TeachBox with touchscreen, 3D visualization and tactile buttons for jogging and operating-mode changes. Three programming levels are available. The “QuickNew Wizard” presents sequences graphically and with animations, while “QuickEdit” allows commands and values to be adjusted without altering the underlying program structure. A text editor supports unrestricted line-by-line programming.

Inputs and outputs, cylinders, grippers and vacuum circuits can be individually named and annotated. The TeachBox interface can also be mirrored on a PC, and its Windows-based architecture enables connection to other platforms.

Process-monitoring functions include drive monitoring and automatic gripper and tool detection. Wittmann’s “SmartRemoval” function is designed to shorten the robot’s intervention time in the injection-molding process and thereby reduce cycle times.

Wittmann will also introduce the new “WX253” linear robot at the show. Compared with the previous “WX153”, the new model features a more compact design and improved maintenance access. The control cabinet on the horizontal Z-axis and the valve block housing on the vertical Y-axis require less installation space, while access to the Y-axis guide carriages has been improved.

The X demolding axis is 100 mm shorter while retaining the same stroke. The “WX253” is designed for payloads of up to 35 kg.

With the “R9” and “WX253”, Wittmann is focusing on the integration of robotics and peripheral equipment in connected injection-molding cells, together with compact design, flexible programming and easier maintenance.
