Borouge Expands Recycled-Content PP Compounding Capacity in Schwechat

Borouge International has started commercial operations at a new compounding plant at its Schwechat site in Austria, expanding its European production capacity for polypropylene compounds. The company says it has invested more than EUR 100 million in the expansion and modernization of the site.

The new facility produces tailor-made PP compounds for applications in the automotive sector, household and electrical appliances, and infrastructure.

PP Compounds with Recycled Content
At the plant, polypropylene granules are compounded with recycled polypropylene, fillers and additives to create application-specific material formulations. These are designed to support lower component weight, targeted mechanical properties and higher levels of recycled content.

The investment broadens Borouge International’s European manufacturing footprint and is expected to improve regional availability of specialized PP compounds. It also increases capacity for applications requiring recycled-content materials or precisely defined performance characteristics.

Automotive and Infrastructure Applications
In the automotive sector, Borouge International is targeting components where lightweighting and the use of recycled materials are becoming increasingly important. PP compounds can help reduce vehicle weight, including in battery-electric vehicles. The company also points to the growing regulatory focus on recycled materials in Europe’s automotive industry.

Additional applications include household appliances, small electrical devices and technical infrastructure products.

For infrastructure applications, Borouge International highlights protective coatings for steel pipes used to transport oil and gas at elevated temperatures. The compounds developed for these applications are designed to provide corrosion resistance and retain their material properties over long periods under demanding operating conditions.

The commissioning of the Schwechat plant strengthens Borouge International’s manufacturing presence in Europe and expands its capacity for higher-value polyolefin applications and material solutions incorporating recycled content.

Borouge International was formed in 2026 through the merger of Borouge, Borealis and Nova Chemicals. The company is owned by XRG, Adnoc’s international investment arm, and OMV Aktiengesellschaft. It focuses on polyolefins and serves markets including consumer goods, infrastructure, energy, mobility and specialty applications.

Borouge International is headquartered in Vienna and also operates a regional headquarters in Abu Dhabi, alongside further corporate hubs in North America and the Asia-Pacific region.
