Borouge International is expanding its mechanical recycling capacity at its Niedergebra site in Germany and Wildon site in Austria. The projects will add almost 14 kt/y of recycled polyolefin capacity in total. The company says the investments are intended to meet growing European demand for recycled polyolefins and support customers in addressing regulatory requirements, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Niedergebra to add almost 9 kt/y of rPO capacity At Niedergebra, the former mtm plastics facility, Borouge plans to increase annual production capacity for recycled mixed polyolefins (rPO) by almost 9 kt. The plant processes mixed post-consumer polyolefin waste into recyclates for rigid plastics applications. The additional capacity is expected to come on stream in the first quarter of 2027. Wildon expansion targets recycled PE At its Wildon site in Austria, formerly operated by Ecoplast, Borouge plans to add up to 5 kt/y of recycled polyethylene (rPE) production capacity. The additional volumes are scheduled to become available from the fourth quarter of 2027. The facility focuses on recyclates for flexible applications, including packaging films. European recycling network Borouge’s European recycling network also includes its Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria. According to the company, the site produces more than 20 kt/y of recyclates based on post-consumer polypropylene (rPP). Together, the three facilities cover a range of material streams and end-use applications, including flexible PE products, rigid PP applications and mixed polyolefins. The additional capacity will expand Borouge International’s offering of mechanically recycled polyolefins, marketed under product portfolios including "Borcycle M" and "Recleo". Outside Europe, the company is also active in plastics circularity in other regions. In North America, recycled PE grades based on post-consumer film waste are produced at the "Syndigo1" facility in Connersville, Indiana. In Asia, Borouge additionally sources recycled materials through a network of suppliers. The European investments will increase the company’s in-house supply of mechanically recycled polyolefins at a time when processors and packaging producers are facing higher recycled-content targets and stricter packaging recycling requirements. By expanding capacity for both flexible and rigid applications, Borouge is also broadening its regional feedstock and recyclate base for circular polyolefin applications.
